Routes with room to turn off

Thailand,
between the stops.

Thailand’s best road trips are not Bangkok-to-beach endurance runs. They are compact circuits where your own wheels unlock mountain villages, national-park gates, old-town food and the hours before tour vans arrive.

These are car-first roadbooks for properly licensed, confident drivers. They avoid casual scooter advice, separate road time from park time and make weather, fatigue and insurance part of the route rather than fine print.

Northern Thailand becomes a road trip when the route stops treating Chiang Rai as a single temple excursion. The road north threads hot springs and rice country, climbs to the tea-growing hills around Mae Salong, touches the border at Mae Sai and follows the Mekong history of Chiang Saen before turning south through Phayao.

A roadbook, not a race
Freedom is not riding farther. It is being able to stop when the market smells good.

Carry the licence and IDP required for your situation, wear seatbelts, avoid night driving and let local road and weather advice overrule the plan.
